Identify This Toenail Series, part 3

Got a little time before I head off to church this morning, so thought I would give y’all another one to ponder-

Your assignment today, should you choose to accept it, is to identify this brand. One of these, for sure, is believed to be a contract knife.

On this one, if you are able to identify the manufacturer(s) (regardless of whether you guessed the brand correctly or not) and support that claim, you’ll win a lifetime subscription to Cutlery News Journal, including the Weekend Editions.

Here you go-

Platts Brothers- Eldred, Pa and Andover, NY. c. 1905- 1911

David Pierce notes in the May 2005 edition of Knife World that Platts Brothers set up shop in Eldred, Pa., at the end of 1905. He also notes they were jobbers at that time.

David’s July 2003 Knife World article entitled “The Platts Cutlers in Andover” has them setting up show in Andover, NY in 1907 and closing up in 1911. They actually made knives in this location.

  1. Roger Says:

The bottom one is a Platts Andover. You can tell by the long pull going through the tang. It`s the only standard toenail I`ve seen that has that (like the jumbos).
The top one is it a Platts Eldred?

  2. Scott Says:

You are all over it! Yes, Eldred and Andover- Platts Bros.

    Very good job, Roger!
