NKCA Dalton Show Recap
It was snowing when I left The Northwest Ga Convention Center earlier today, but the blustery day only added to making this a memorable trip for me. For you newer collectors who have yet to attend a knife show, you must make every effort to get to one.
Attending a knife show, for me, is about 1) scoping out the toenails for sale, 2) seeing the prices being asked for those toenails, 3) meeting knife folks, 4) visiting with the knife folks I know, 5) finding out the latest talk on the goings on in the Knifedom, And 6) having the opportunity to handle a lot of toenails and testing my learning on identifying the good ones from bad ones. This show was all of that and more!
While I intended to capture the moment on camera for you, I have to confess I pulled out my trusty Sony Cybershot only to see that dreaded battery-dead icon flash before my eyes. I was disappointed because yesterday I didn’t get it out planning to take my shots today. Nonetheless, let me recap what I saw.
First off, I am pleased to report there were ample toenails for sale. I was encouraged by the quantity and quality of them. Overall, I saw Catts, Wilbert, Case Brothers, W R Case, HSB, TESTED XX, Dotted Series, Classics and all the current productions. At least these were the ones out on display AND there are always toenails along with hundreds of other patterns the dealers have in their rolls under the table.
One of the aspects the folks who are regulars on the knife show circuit enjoy is the camaraderie. I will say, as I get to know more folks in person the more fun the shows are. Because I don’t have a lot of time to go to shows, I don’t know lots of folks, but upon being introduced many know our site here at ET.com. Of course, they all say “oh, so you’re the Elephant Toenail guy?” Last night a bunch of the regulars went to dinner and I was invited to tag along. It was really fun to sit there and listen to the talk (argue/debate) about various topics. Knife guys and gals are really down to earth folks who don’t take themselves too seriously. We had fun.
As I drove home in the light snow fall, I replayed the show in my mind. I actually counted up and listed (yes, I write as I drive) the various toenails I saw, who had them and their prices. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to hit the Dalton show once again. One day, I hope to see you there so we can grab a table and talk toenails for a minute or two.
