Who was first to make a toenail?
Hey Scott,
Just a quick note to say hello and that I enjoyed your article in Knife World. I found it very informative and an absolute pleasure to read. I learned a lot about Toenails that I didn’t know before.
I do have one question when you have minute.
On your web site you mentioned that Cattaraugus may have been the first outfit to produce a toenail. In the KW article there was no mention of that theory. What changed your mind?

Derek,
Thanks for your kind words about the Elephant toenail article.
Regarding which firm made toenails and when, unfortunately looking that far in the past simply is cause for speculation. At this point, I don’t have any conclusive information as to which firms produced toenails before 1900ish. Yes, Cattaraugus was already making knives, as was Napanoch, Miller Bros., New York Knife Co, and a handful of others. My problem is I don’t have anything that I can get my hands on that evidences these firms did in fact make toenails around that time or before. The earliest record I have been able to find is the 1900ish Case Brothers catalog with both, what we now call, the ‘50 and ‘51 patterns shown.
