The Elusive Platts Easy-Open single blade Jumbo

I heard through the grapevine that the all elusive single bladed easy open Platts Jumbo Swellcenter (what a mouth full) has been spotted. plattseasyopensingleblade2.jpgAs you may know, we here at ET.com have participated in conversations with some of you as to whether this is an authentic Platts Jumbo or an aftermarket alteration. The jury is still out. I got my bloodhounds out of the pen and went to work. You’d have thought I was on a coon hunt I was so diligent in tracking it. I has seen a picture of one but never in real life…so finally I was going to solve the mystery of whether big foot exists (oops, I mean the knife).I tracked it down in the remote corners of the world wide web and made contact with the individual who actually had it. (Actually, I had heard it was for sale, which made me want to find it all the more.)”Well, what did you find out?” you may be asking. Well, I didn’t authenticate it. I didn’t get it in my hands. But, I will tell you the man who has it (a well respected dealer of vintage knives) is convinced it is the real deal by the handsome price he is asking. If you aren’t familiar with this specific toenail allow me to show you what I found. When I inquired about it I was told the price is $3600. Which for one that has been subject to as much speculation as this knife has I couldn’t even bring myself to make an offer after learning that was his asking price. I will say the master blade looks mighty full though…in fact, I wanted the knife- no two ways about it, but couldn’t bring myself to pull the trigger. Pretty cool though, isn’t it.

    Hi Scott,

Do you know if the Platts Easy-Open single blade Jumbo is still available from this dealer? If so, do you know how to contact him about this unusual knife or other old swellcenters he may have for sale?

    Thanks,
    Vernon

    Hey Vernon
I understand he sold it. The dealer’s name is Art Green. I have seen around some of the shows here in the South. He has some really old and unusual knives. I do know from a friend of mine he has a bunch of toenails, cause my friend bought many of them from him.
I’ll need some time and may can dig up Art’s email address.
    Scott
