THE GALLERY OF ELEPHANT TOENAILS

The Gallery offers an broad range of antique toenails, including a wide variety of brands & conditions- from high-end investment grade to toenails that can be upgraded as others become available. Most of the toenails listed are duplicates in my collection.

To view the toenails currently being offered visit The Catalog.

Many of the knives in the first group of inventory were purchased by the Charter members of the Elephant Toenails Collector Club in a special preview prior to The Gallery being open to the public.

There are several reasons The Gallery was created and one of the primary reasons was to offer duplicates from my collection (see Why A Gallery). I am not a dealer, but from time to time may include one that comes my way when I think collectors will have an interest.

Many collectors are surprised to find the tremendous amount of information that exists on toenails from the very early 1900's . I hope you take some time to visit other areas of ElephantToenails.com to learn about the rich history of this pattern.

Toenail collections take many directions. Some collectors go for all the variations of toenails made by a particular cutlery company, like all the New York Knife Company toenails. Others collect toenails based upon the handle material. Some hunt for hardware brands. Some prefer a given style, like the Jumbo swellcenter.

Regardless of the direction you choose to take with your toenail collection, let me encourage you to find a toenail you can build on, as well as to experience the enjoyment this knife pattern offers. Then you will experience firsthand why I say-

“ I’m having as much fun as I did as a kid collecting rocks.”

Some of the reasons Toenails are highly collectible include-

  • The actual shape and look of the knife (gigantic master blade and huge slabs of bone or pearl that make up the handles).
  • The “Life and Times” of the knife- The toenail is one of the most historically significant pocket knives made by American Cutlery companies. I like to ask, “Where was it made? When was it made? What was it like during that time? Who owned the cutlery company at that time? Where did they come from? Where did the drummers peddle it?“ and questions like that.
